Mandriva es completamente recomendada como distro.
Aunque ha pasado por momento de estancamiento como desarrollo, también es cierto que las versiones son estables y hermosas, aunque la version paga es MUCHISIMO mejor para newbies.

Prueben!!!

Aps... aunque no tiene todas las aceleraciones gráficas activas, intenten primero con maquinas virtuales para que se acostumbren y vean que es lo que es necesario saber.

Cual es la diferencia entre la version i586 y la x86? Aqui va:

La arquitectura de una distro GNU/Linux se refiere al tipo de procesador que puede correr dicha distro.

Dicho lo cual, aquí la tabla de equivalencias:

i386: 386 (16 bits).

i486: 486 (16 bits).

i586: Intel Pentium (32 bits).

i686: Intel Pentium PRO y MMX, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4 (32 bits).

ppc: Power PC (MAC).

x86_64: tecnología 64 bits de Intel.

amd64: tecnología 64 bits de AMD.

Sparc: servidores Sun Sparc.

* Falta la equivalencia con los procesadores AMD y algunos Intel.

Ya no hablo de distro sino de software. Un software compilado en una arquitectura "x" puede correrse bajo una arquitectura superior, no pudiendose realizar la operación contraria.

El caso que pones. No se si tu micro es de 32 o 64 bits. Si fuese este último tu microprocesador sacará el máximo de su rendimiento con una distro x86_64.
Si fuese de 32 bits, lo mejor es elegir la arquitectura que se adapte a tu microprocesador para que de el máximo.

Todo lo que te he contado es en teoría, la práctica es distinta.
Si tu micro fuese de 64 bits, podrías utilizar una distro de 32 bits y correría sin ningún problema.
El inconveniente de las distros de 64 bits son las incompatibilidades con drivers, hardware y software.

Yo recomendaría la i586.

Nadie desvirtua el tema al contrario, tu tema genero algunas dudas en cuanto a que version descargar para tener un rendimiento optimo. pero bueno solo queria ayudarte. ya mejor olvidalo.

pues Mandriva tiene buen soporte de hardware, y PCLinuxOS se deriva de Mandriva así que es muy probable que tenga soporte para esas tarjetas de video.
intenta con el live-dvd, pero es puro KDE4 o podrías intentar con Mageia 1[otro fork de Mandriva] que tiene KDE4 y gnome2. Mageia tambien tiene buen soporte para legacy hardware.

ahora estoy respondiendo desde mandriva, (estoy con win7 y mandriva insalado). no conozco mucho el mundo linux pero espero ir poco a poco.
lo unico malo que no me reconoce mi HP PSC 1410 all in one.
si alguna persona puede ayudarme seria genial.
