Matamoros, México (25 febrero 2010).- El Consulado de Estados Unidos en Matamoros anunció el cierre a partir de hoy y hasta el próximo lunes de la Agencia Consular en Reynosa, debido a los hechos violentos registrados en esta zona de la frontera de Tamaulipas.
Michael Barkin, Cónsul de Estados Unidos en Matamoros, dijo que se está alertando a los ciudadanos americanos a no cruzar territorio mexicano por la frontera de Reynosa por su propia seguridad.
"El Consulado decidió cerrar su sede (Agencia Consular) en Reynosa debido a los últimos acontecimientos registrados que podrían significar riesgo para los ciudadanos estadounidenses", señaló.
Barkin informó lo anterior previó al evento del saludo binacional entre autoridades de Brownsville y Matamoros.
El funcionario estadounidense señaló que aunque se les está avisando que las autoridades policiacas mexicanas están trabajando en el tema de seguridad, en estos momentos existen riesgos para quienes quieran viajar a México.
Agregó que el Consulado de Estados Unidos en Matamoros sigue trabajando de manera normal y por el momento no se tiene la posibilidad de su cierre.
La Agencia Consular da servicio a ciudadanos estadounidenses en diversos tipos de trámites.

ALERT: NEW Warden Message from American Consulate General, Matamoros, Tamaulipas, February 24, 2010
This Warden Message is being issued to advise U.S. citizens of recent gun battles in Reynosa, Mexico, and cities surrounding Reynosa in the last week. Several gunfights are believed to have involved narcotics trafficking organizations. The U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros has restricted the travel of American officials to Reynosa until further notice. The Consulate General also has temporarily closed the Reynosa Consular Agency until further notice. The Consulate General in Matamoros advises U.S. citizens to take the above information into consideration when making any decisions concerning traveling to or within Reynosa. The Consulate General also advises U.S. citizens to stay current with media coverage of local events.
