Intel Threading Building Blocks: Outfitting C++ for Multi-core Processor Parallelism

EAN : 9780596514808
ISBN : 0596514808
Author : James Reinders
Publisher : O’Reilly Media, Inc.
Pub Date : 2007-07-12
Pages : 332
Language : English Description : Multi-core chips from Intel and AMD offer a dramatic boost in speed and responsiveness, and plenty of opportunities for multiprocessing on ordinary desktop computers. But they also present a challenge: More than ever, multithreading is a requirement for good performance. This guide explains how to maximize the benefits of these processors through a portable C++ library that works on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Unix systems. With it, you’ll learn how to use Intel Threading Building Blocks (TBB) effectively for parallel programming — without having to be a threading expert. Written by James Reinders, Chief Evangelist of Intel Software Products, and based on the experience of Intel’s developers and customers, this book explains the key tasks in multithreading and how to accomplish them with TBB in a portable and robust manner. With plenty of examples and full reference material, the book lays out common patterns of uses, reveals the gotchas in TBB, and gives important guidelines for choosing among alternatives in order to get the best performance. You’ll learn how Intel Threading Building Blocks: Enables you to specify tasks instead of threads for better portability, easier programming, more understandable source code, and better performance and scalability in general Focuses on the goal of parallelizing computationally intensive work to deliver high-level solutions Is compatible with other threading packages, and doesn’t force you to pick one package for your entire program Emphasizes scalable, data-parallel programming, which allows program performance to increase as you add processors Relies on generic programming, which enables you to write the best possible algorithms with thefewest constraints Any C++ programmer who wants to write an application to run on a multi-core system will benefit from this book. TBB is also very approachable for a C programmer or a C++ programmer without much experience with templates. Best of all, you don’t need experience with parallel programming or multi-core processors to use this book.

Java Concurrency in Practice

EAN : 9780321349606
ISBN : 0321349601
Author : Brian Goetz, Tim Peierls, Joshua Bloch, Joseph Bowbeer, David Holmes, Doug Lea
Publisher : Addison-Wesley Professional
Pub Date : 2006-05-19
Pages : 384
Language : English Description : “I was fortunate indeed to have worked with a fantastic team on the design and implementation of the concurrency features added to the Java platform in Java 5.0 and Java 6. Now this same team provides the best explanation yet of these new features, and of concurrency in general. Concurrency is no longer a subject for advanced users only. Every Java developer should read this book.” –Martin Buchholz JDK Concurrency Czar, Sun Microsystems “For the past 30 years, computer performance has been driven by Moore’s Law; from now on, it will be driven by Amdahl’s Law. Writing code that effectively exploits multiple processors can be very challenging. Java Concurrency in Practice provides you with the concepts and techniques needed to write safe and scalable Java programs for today’s–and tomorrow’s–systems.” –Doron Rajwan Research Scientist, Intel Corp “This is the book you need if you’re writing–or designing, or debugging, or maintaining, or contemplating–multithreaded Java programs. If you’ve ever had to synchronize a method and you weren’t sure why, you owe it to yourself and your users to read this book, cover to cover.”–Ted Neward Author of Effective Enterprise Java “Brian addresses the fundamental issues and complexities of concurrency with uncommon clarity. This book is a must-read for anyone who uses threads and cares about performance.” –Kirk Pepperdine CTO, JavaPerformanceTuning.com “This book covers a very deep and subtle topic in a very clear and concise way, making it the perfect Java Concurrency reference manual. Each page is filled with the problems (and solutions!) that programmers struggle with every day. Effectively exploiting concurrency is becoming more and more important now that Moore’s Law is delivering more cores but not faster cores, and this book will show you how to do it.” –Dr. Cliff Click Senior Software Engineer, Azul Systems “I have a strong interest in concurrency, and have probably written more thread deadlocks and made more synchronization mistakes than most programmers. Brian’s book is the most readable on the topic of threading and concurrency in Java, and deals with this difficult subject with a wonderful hands-on approach. This is a book I am recommending to all my readers of The Java Specialists’ Newsletter, because it is interesting, useful, and relevant to the problems facing Java developers today.” –Dr. Heinz Kabutz The Java Specialists’ Newsletter “I’ve focused a career on simplifying simple problems, but this book ambitiously and effectively works to simplify a complex but critical subject: concurrency. Java Concurrency in Practice is revolutionary in its approach, smooth and easy in style, and timely in its delivery–it’s destined to be a very important book.” –Bruce Tate Author of Beyond Java “Java Concurrency in Practice is an invaluable compilation of threading know-how for Java developers. I found reading this book intellectually exciting, in part because it is an excellent introduction to Java’s concurrency API, but mostly because it captures in a thorough and accessible way expert knowledge on threading not easily found elsewhere.” –Bill Venners Author of Inside the Java Virtual Machine Threads are a fundamental part of the Java platform. As multicore processors become the norm, using concurrency effectively becomes essential for building high-performance applications.Java SE 5 and 6 are a huge step forward for the development of concurrent applications, with improvements to the Java Virtual Machine to support high-performance, highly scalable concurrent classes and a rich set of new concurrency building blocks. In Java Concurrency in Practice, the creators of these new facilities explain not only how they work and how to use them, but also the motivation and design patterns behind them. However, developing, testing, and debugging multithreaded programs can still be very difficult; it is all too easy to create concurrent programs that appear to work, but fail when it matters most: in production, under heavy load. Java Concurrency in Practice arms readers with both the theoretical underpinnings and concrete techniques for building reliable, scalable, maintainable concurrent applications. Rather than simply offering an inventory of concurrency APIs and mechanisms, it provides design rules, patterns, and mental models that make it easier to build concurrent programs that are both correct and performant. This book covers: *Basic concepts of concurrency and thread safety *Techniques for building and composing thread-safe classes *Using the concurrency building blocks in java.util.concurrent *Performance optimization dos and don’ts *Testing concurrent programs *Advanced topics such as atomic variables, nonblocking algorithms, and the Java Memory Model

Chess For Dummies

Many consider chess to be the best game ever invented. Chess imposes a set of rules and has finite limits, but just as you start to think you’re finally solving its mysteries, chess thwarts you. Sometimes, therefore, the game is frustrating, but far more often, chess proves both surprising and delightful. The deeper you get into chess, the more of its secrets you unearth — but the game has never been tapped out. Even today’s monster computers are far from playing the theorized “perfect” chess game.

Science & Grace: God's Reign in the Natural Sciences

Tim Morris & Don Petcher, "Science & Grace: God's Reign in the Natural Sciences"
Crossway Books (2006) | English | ISBN: 1581345496 | 372 pages | PDF | 1.78 MB

Jesus Christ is Lord of creation and Christians are called to bear witness to his glory and faithfulness in all things. Yet in recent years, science and Christianity have often been considered two distinct types of knowledge, each self-contained—the truth of one doing nothing to the validity of the other. We are now living in a time of transition from a modern to a postmodern cultural context, and how exactly Christianity and science will influence and be influenced by this transition is yet to be seen.

In this transition, the divide that seemed to exist between these two branches of knowledge appears to be crumbling and an apparent “war” between science and Christian theology has started—with many on both sides insisting that a high regard of the one automatically translates into a low regard for the other. More and more the developments of science appear to challenge the basic beliefs of Christianity. Has science gotten off track? Does Christian theology need to be corrected by science? Is there such a thing as a Christian science or is science just science? The shift in our cultural backdrop now provides a valuable opportunity for Christians to examine these questions and to reassess the way we have come to frame science and religion issues. While many books address science and faith issues, Science & Grace uniquely offers wisdom for Christians who desire to refine their perspective on science so that critical analysis of the scientific pronouncements of our day as well as thankful appreciation for scientific endeavor spring naturally from their Christian worldview. Authors Tim Morris and Don Petcher help readers to develop a “theology of science” that utilizes specifically Christian convictions about God's faithfulness to his creation. This “theology of science” encourages Christians to be actively and confidently involved in science itself as well as in the current discussions about the status of science in our culture, thus bearing witness to God's reign even in the natural sciences.

She examines the methods by which the presence of water is detected, both within the solar system and beyond. One by one she visits a diversity of locations in the cosmos, from the nearest planets to the furthest galaxies, where water has been discovered. In the formation of the solar system, she explains how the water molecule played a major part, with the so-called ‘ice frontier’ determining the natures of the terrestrial and giant planets.
The book explores the presence of water in the various bodies of the Solar System: in the giant planets, with their rings and systems of satellites, in comets, asteroids and in the terrestrial planets. By tracing the history of water in the atmospheres of Mars, Venus and the Earth, the author explains how small differences in temperatures, causing water to exist in different states on different planets – vapour on Venus, liquid on Earth and solid ice on Mars – have led to a great divergence in the evolutions of the three planets. The story of water on Mars, an aspect of great topical interest, offers an insight into the possibility (still only a theory) that there was once life on that planet. The book concludes by looking at the important role played by water in studies of habitable exoplanets.

Mars, A Cosmic Stepping Stone: Uncovering Humanity's Cosmic Context

Kevin Nolan "Mars, A Cosmic Stepping Stone: Uncovering Humanity's Cosmic Context"
Published by Springer Praxis | Publication date : August 2008 | ISBN : 0387341641 | PDF | 384 pages | English | 16.7 MB

The questions of our origin and cosmic abundance of life are among the most compelling facing humanity. We have determined much about the nature and origin of the Universe and our place in it, but with virtually all evidence of our origin long since gone from our world and an unimaginably vast Universe still to explore, defining answers are difficult to obtain.
For all of the difficulties facing us however, the planet Mars may act as a ‘cosmic stepping stone’ in uncovering some of the answers. Although different today, the origin and early history of both Earth and Mars may have been similar enough to consider an origin to life on both. But because Mars’ planetary processes collapsed over three billion years ago - just as life was beginning to flourish on Earth - a significant and unique record of activity from that era perhaps relevant to the origin of life still resides there today.
In recognition of this, both the US and Europe are currently engaged in one of the most ambitious programs of exploration ever undertaken. Built on our legacy of Mars exploration from the Viking era and before, a far-reaching, phased, program of robotic exploration now and over the coming decades aims at obtaining definitive answers about the origin and nature of the red planet and what it has to say about the origin and cosmic abundance of life. This book examines these issues in one of the most comprehensive treatments ever written about the planet Mars and our legacy of engagement with it, in language suitable for non-expert and expert alike.

Opening chapters consider the question of life in the Universe and the origin of life on Earth and what challenges face us in uncovering defining answers. With a realization of its importance in this, the next section examines the legacy of our engagement with Mars. From Kepler’s work on its orbit, Schiaparelli’s efforts to resolve its surface features and NASA’s Mariner and Viking programs attempting to determine whether life resides upon the surface, Mars has remained elusive, yet always prodding and extending our capabilities in exploration and our perception of our place in the Universe. Subsequent chapters consider our current understanding of the planet and the recently devised comprehensive program for scientific exploration. All recent, current and upcoming missions and the latest findings are discussed in detail, providing our best understanding yet of a vast and ancient landscape indeed characterized by significant activity relevant to our quest and which also points to a planet far from dead today. Late chapters consider NASA and ESA plans for Mars over the next thirty years, increasingly shaped by the scientific successes to date, unprecedented public interest and by issues of planetary protection. And with mounting political interest, our program for Mars may culminate in a human mission to Mars, perhaps sometime around 2040. The greatest discovery, however, remains to be made. If even one microbe is found on Mars, it will reveal a cosmic context for life with Earth as one place among many harboring life, confirming our cosmic origins and destiny.

Wave Physics: Oscillations - Solitons - Chaos

This textbook is intended for those second year undergraduates in science and engineering who will later need an understanding of electromagnetic theory and quantum mechanics. The classical physics of oscillations and waves is developed at a more advanced level than has been customary for the second year, providing a basis for the quantum mechanics that follows. In this new edition the Green's function is explained, reinforcing the integration of quantum mechanics with classical physics. The text may also form the basis of an “introduction to theoretical physics” for physics majors. The concluding chapters give special attention to topics in current wave physics: nonlinear waves, solitons, and chaotic behavior.

Searching for Water in the Univers

Thérèse Encrenaz "Searching for Water in the Universe"
Published by Springer Praxis | Publication date: October 2006 | ISBN: 0387341749 | PDF | 195 pages | English | 35.6 MB

In Searching for Water in the Solar System, Thérèse Encrenaz takes the reader on a journey through the Universe in search of water. She begins by introducing the most well-known of molecule H2O, its physical and chemical characteristics and its cosmic Formation and abundance.

JavaScript Professional Projects

Description: Because JavaScript is not a stand-alone technology, this book shows you how to work with such things as forms, graphics images, sound files, hyperlinks, and cascading style sheets (CSS). You will learn how to write not only JavaScript that can stand on its own within a Web page, but also how to write scripts that call functions or otherwise interact with applications written in other development languages. The programming concepts discussed within the book and shown by its examples are directly applicable to writing code in other languages. The JavaScript examples in the book's projects show where and how to insert JavaScript code within HTML tags and how to work with the document object model (DOM) to execute functions that make an otherwise static Web page an interactive document.

Nagios 3 Enterprise Network Monitoring: Including Plug-Ins and Hardware Devices

By Max Schubert (Author), Derrick Bennett (Author), Jonathan Gines (Author), Andrew Hay (Author), John Strand (Author) Nagios is an Open Source network, hardware, and application monitoring program. It is designed to inform system administrators of problems on their networks before their clients, end-users or managers do. Nagios is a SysAdmin's best friend. Nagios is installed on over 300,000 machines worldwide, and truly is a global product: approximately 25.6% of users are in the U.S., and 30% in EMEA. Nagios can monitor everything from network bandwidth to the temperature and humidity in a server room. SysAdmins are able to use Nagios for such a variety of purposes through custom software "plug ins" and third party hardware. SysAdmins customize these plug ins instructing Nagios to monitor the servers, applications, or devices that are most critical to their network infrastructure. These plug ins also allow SysAdmins to integrate Nagios with other monitoring devices and applications like Snort and Wireshark. Nagios can also be fully integrated with third party environmental monitoring devices and remote power supplies. When Nagios detects a problem, it can notify the SysAdmin in a variety of different ways (email, instant message, SMS, etc.). Current status information, historical logs, and reports can all be accessed via a web browser. Nagios could send a text message to a SysAdmin sitting on his couch at home that the temperature in the server room is too hot and could potentially damage the equipment. The SysAdmin can then check the status of the server from home using his Nagios Web interface, and then coordinate with the appropriate facility management personnel to check the air conditioning in the server room. This is merely one example of Nagios? capabilities. The same scenario could be applied to an overloaded Exchange server, a router being pounded by a Denial of Service Attack, or a user accessing or downloading unauthorized materials.

Performance Analysis of Queuing and Computer Networks (Chapman & Hall/Crc Computer & Information Science Series)

Description: Performance Analysis of Queuing and Computer Networks develops simple models and analytical methods from first principles to evaluate performance metrics of various configurations of computer systems and networks. It presents many concepts and results of probability theory and stochastic processes.

After an introduction to queues in computer networks, this self-contained book covers important random variables, such as Pareto and Poisson, that constitute models for arrival and service disciplines. It then deals with the equilibrium M/M/1/∞queue, which is the simplest queue that is amenable for analysis. Subsequent chapters explore applications of continuous time, state-dependent single Markovian queues, the M/G/1 system, and discrete time queues in computer networks. The author then proceeds to study networks of queues with exponential servers and Poisson external arrivals as well as the G/M/1 queue and Pareto interarrival times in a G/M/1 queue. The last two chapters analyze bursty, self-similar traffic, and fluid flow models and their effects on queues.

Improve Your Attacking Chess

Checkmating the enemy king is the ultimate goal in chess. In this book Simon Williams helps readers to practice and improve their skills in this area of practical chess. A mating attack typically involves a build-up of forces, followed by an opening of lines, often involving a sacrifice. Once the enemy king is exposed, it is either checkmated, or only saved at a great cost in material. The puzzles in this book are pertinent to all these phases, and involve questions of where to attack and what pieces to use. Topics include: attacking the king caught in the center; central breakthrough; standard sacrifices against the castled king; chasing the king; endgame mates; and combination themes.

Dynamic: Systems and Control With Applications By N. U. Ahmed

In recent years, significant applications of systems and control theory have been witnessed in diversed areas such as physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, management and finance. In particular, the most interesting applications have taken place in areas such as aerospace, buildings and space structure, suspension bridges, artificial heart, chemotherapy, power system, hydrodynamics and computer communication networks. There are many prominent areas of systems and control theory that include systems governed by linear and nonlinear ordinary differential equations, systems governed by partial differential equations including their stochastic counter parts and, above all, systems governed by abstract differential and functional differential equations and inclusions on Banach spaces, including their stochastic counterparts. The objective of this book is to present a small segment of theory and applications of systems and control governed by ordinary differential equations and inclusions. It is expected that any reader who has absorbed the materials presented here would have no difficulty to reach the core of current research.

Coexistence in Wireless Networks: Challenges and System-Level Solutions in the Unlicensed Bands

The increasing popularity of wireless networks makes interference and cross-talk between multiple systems inevitable. This book describes techniques for quantifying this, and the effects on the performance of wireless networks operating in the unlicensed bands. It also presents a variety of system-level solutions, obviating the need for new hardware implementations. The book starts with basic concepts and wireless protocols before moving on to interference performance evaluation, interference modeling, coexistence solutions, and concluding with common misconceptions and pitfalls. The theory is illustrated by reference to real-world systems such as Bluetooth and WiFi. With a number of case studies and many illustrations, this book will be of interest to graduate students in electrical engineering and computer science, to practitioners designing new WLAN and WPAN systems or developing new techniques for interference suppression, and to general users of merging wireless technologies.

Designing Community: Charrettes, Masterplans and Form-based Codes

Greenfield sites around towns and cities, and redevelopment infill sites in existing urban areas often become battlegrounds between the conflicting interests of developers and communities. In America, design charrettes (intensive design and planning workshops) have become widely used as a means of bringing together these divergent groups, using detailed design exercises to establish agreement around a development masterplan. Despite the increasing frequency of their use, charrettes are widely misunderstood and can be misapplied.
This book provides a detailed guidance on the proper and most effective ways to use this helpful tool. The book combines charrette masterplanning with the creation of "design-based" codes (also known as "form-based" codes) to control the development's implementation in line with the design and planning principles established during the charrette process.

Some of the highlighted fetures of this book :
• Provides detailed and specific guidance on the management and best use of the increasingly popular, yet complex, public design event
• Blends history, theory and practice to paint the full picture of the past, present and possible future of community planning
• Shows how to manage the conflict between development, design and planning professionals and community interests inherent in current design and planning practice

That testimony underscores the success of the authors’ approach, which combines the best elements of reform with the most reliable aspects of mainstream calculus teaching, resulting in a motivating, challenging book. Smith/Minton also provide exceptional, reality-based applications that appeal to students’ interests and demonstrate the elegance of math in the world around us. New features include: • A new organization placing all transcendental functions early in the book and consolidating the introduction to L'Hôpital's Rule in a single section. • More concisely written explanations in every chapter. • Many new exercises (for a total of 7,000 throughout the book) that require additional rigor not found in the 2nd Edition. • New exploratory exercises in every section that challenge students to synthesize key concepts to solve intriguing projects. • New commentaries (“Beyond Formulas”) that encourage students to think mathematically beyond the procedures they learn. • New counterpoints to the historical notes, “Today in Mathematics,” that stress the contemporary dynamism of mathematical research and applications, connecting past contributions to the present. • An enhanced discussion of differential equations and additional applications of vector calculus.

Bioclimatic Housing: Innovative Designs for Warmer Climates

In the search for sustainable architecture there is growing interest amongst architects, designers and engineers in the relationship between nature and design. The term ‘bioclimatic’, traditionally relating to the dynamic between climate and living organisms, is applied by the authors in focusing on countries where housing requires cooling for a significant part of the year and presenting both the theory and practice of innovative, low-energy architecture. Having set out new definitions of bioclimatic housing, the book interweaves the themes of social progress, technological solutions and industry developments within a discussion of global and country trends. With case studies from Iran, Malaysia, Australia, Japan, Sri Lanka and Italy, this is a truly international and authoritative work, prepared under the auspices of a 5-year International Energy Agency (IEA) project.

Photoshop® CS3 Restoration and Retouching Bible

You may be asking why the topics of photo restoration and retouching are being covered together in the same book. That’s a reasonable question, considering that on the surface the goals of these two processes seem quite different. The goal of restoration with just about anything — old cars, antique furniture, and so on — is to repair and refurbish something until it resembles mint condition. In the case of old photos, the goal is to erase the years and return the photos to what they looked like when they were new. The goal of retouching, on the other hand, is to take the original image to a higher level by enhancing its positive aspects and reducing or removing the distracting elements. The finished product becomes something more valuable than the original image because of those enhancements.
Though these two goals seem at odds, the truth is many of the same Photoshop tools and techniques are used to achieve both goals. So it doesn’t make sense to discuss one of these subjects without discussing the other. It also doesn’t make sense for you, as a student of Photoshop, to learn to use these tools and techniques for only restoration or retouching. You never know when you may want to try something new. If you take the time to learn everything in this book now, you’ll be ready to handle just about any image editing challenge you’re likely to encounter.

Wale Soyinka, "Linux Administration: A Beginner's Guide, Fifth Edition"
McGraw-Hill Osborne Media | ISBN: 0071545883 | September 23, 2008 | 662 pages | PDF | 3.7MB

Administering a Linux system isn't much like administering a Windows machine. Though the goals are similar and comparable problems arise under both environments, they each require administrators to adopt a certain way of thinking about processes and data. Linux Administration: A Beginner's Guide helps readers adapt their Windows experience to Linux work. Author Steve Shah does a great job of clueing Linux newcomers into the environment. His explanations are clear, patient, accurate, and useful, and they cover all aspects of the system administrator's job. He's careful to explain hundreds of commands in a logical way, including lists of options and examples of typical uses in many cases.
